Moreover, these individuals can justify their conclusions based on arguments and evidence.

Scientist Vilhelm clarified inferential reasoning as an internal mental process. Through this process, people try to create a system that regulates particular issues or events depending on particular phenomena.

On the other hand, scientist Gruen defined inferential reasoning as a mental activity involving specific cognitive processes. These processes lead us to a set of evaluations, arguments, evidence, and hypotheses. In this process, we look for evidence to support particular conclusions and comprehend the connections between them to determine the cause and effect.

2. Inferential Reasoning as Problem-Solving Behavior

Reebs characterized inferential reasoning as one of the logical reasoning patterns that people use to find relationships between various phenomena through scientific investigation. It involves testing specialized hypotheses related to these relationships to determine all possible outcomes and available alternatives.

Furthermore, inductive reasoning makes it possible to forecast logical outcomes and examine the probabilities of particular events. It entails providing supporting data, arguments, and conclusions. According to a different academic, inferential reasoning involves observing and assessing facts and hypotheses to derive simple, understandable solutions to problems.

One scholar named Abdul Nabi (1993) determined some characteristics that set inferential reasoning apart from other thought processes. These characteristics can be summarized as follows:

  • It is a logical means to arrive at conclusions from premises without conducting experiments.
  • It is associated with logical reasoning and used to generate new information.
  • In inductive reasoning, cause and effect are interconnected.
  • It is important for generalization and differentiation processes.
  • A learner cannot fully engage in inferential reasoning without a rich memory of prior experiences and information.
  • Inferential reasoning transitions people from the unknown to the known. It is characterized by seriousness and productivity because all results carry new information.
  • It is credible, relying on evidence-based reasoning.
  • When people are faced with particular circumstances requiring them to find connections and relationships between previously provided information to produce new knowledge, they use inferential reasoning.
  • Sometimes, we use it to derive new solutions by leveraging a vast amount of information.
  • It encourages the investigation of various avenues and opportunities rather than blindly pursuing new activities without prior thought and awareness.

Inferential Reasoning Importance

This reasoning type is the most sophisticated and adaptable over time. It represents methodical reasoning that complies with all scientific principles. It serves as a clear indicator of intelligence and is fundamentally used as a scientific problem-solving method.

Some notable features of inferential reasoning include its logical foundation and its use in general and accurate investigations of specific issues. Every step in this mental process is essentially predicated on particular ideas.

So, its significance lies in the following aspects:

  • It clarifies that selection, arrangement, understanding, and insight are all that constitute the reasoning process.
  • It is crucial and influential in helping people become more accurate observers and in empowering them to carry out all knowledge-related tasks.
  • It mostly depends on the perception and comprehension of relationships, and it rises in tandem with an increase in human cognitive activity.
  • Deductive thinkers perform better academically and attain very high levels of cognitive learning, which is a detailed and profound comprehension of the subject matter that gives them a very clear learning method that enables them to expand their knowledge logically.
  • Reasoning helps the learner in acquisition, understanding, and application, providing them with several useful learning methods and benefiting from this knowledge. Everything a person learns will be firmly established in their mind. If they conclude the information themselves, they will be able to reach it again as they did the first time if they forget it.
  • A tool for broadening one's knowledge and refining reasoning by helping the learner identify new and possible truths from the set of facts at their disposal.

Inferential Reasoning Skills

Thinking is the mental process of problem-solving, distinct from physical action. This process is called inferential, or more precisely, “deductive thinking.” Here are some inferential reasoning skills:

  • Mental performances in which an individual attempts to utilize all available information and data to uncover all recent results.
  • To reach specific and recent conclusions, we follow the steps of inferential processes, linking each cause to a specific result and understanding the relationships between a large number of results.
  • Some scholars describe inferential reasoning as initially divided into "induction, deduction, and inference."

Inductive Skill

Going from the part to the whole and from generalization to particularization, an individual uses mental processes to progress through the inductive skill from the specific to the general to arrive at specific conclusions. 

The inductive skill is  one of the inferential reasoning skills and is considered a process of mental reasoning aimed at reaching conclusions and generalizations that exceed available evidence's limits Induction can be divided in terms of methods into two specific types:

1. Complete Inductive Reasoning

It concludes by examining all of the documented cases relevant to the topic of study or phenomenon. This includes studying the individual cases of a given subject or phenomenon. 

2. Incomplete Inductive Reasoning

It involves reaching conclusions by studying a specific sample of items or cases related to various subjects and phenomena.

Deductive Skill

Some scholars define deductive skill as one of the inferential reasoning skills, considering it a downward process from the top of the structure, representing the process of abstraction downward. It helps reflect inductive reasoning, clarifying outlined experiences and experiments, leading to generalizations and universals.
